The Ritual Master As I am preparing this video, I’m desperately trying to remember how I got to read this book. And like many of my discoveries, it is the fruit of a magical conspiration between the Universe and my loyal Christmas elves, that bring forward the perfect books for the season.
The Snow Child starts off as a gloomy November day, casting a shadow of sadness over the characters and the scenery. But suddenly, as snow begins to fall, magical things happen. Don’t worry, it’s not a fantasy novel, even though were are times when I had my doubts about it… Instead, it is an exploration of the Alaskan wilderness and all the self reflection it imposes on those brave enough to face it.
Without spoiling anything for you, I can say that the story itself is so beautifully constructed, you will burn through the pages trying to find out what happens next. And yet, it feels like the rhythm it imposes is just perfect to slow down a little for winter time.
Each character has such a well defined personality, you’ll find it hard to choose a favourite. It’s a book to be enjoyed in wintertime for sure, and with a cup of something warm beside you. A book that takes you to a mystical land of infinite snow and glistening nature. Turning the pages, you can almost smell the evergreens in the distance, and the crisp still winter air on a cold December night.
