Special : An Evening in Giverny, getting lost in a cookbook

A summer dream of ponds full of lillies and ripe tomatoes, of happy moments in the cool night air, preparing a garden party inspired by one of the most famous artists of all time…Today’s Ritual is inspired by a different kind of read, a summery escape into the fascinating world of Claude Monet through one of the many cookbooks that take inspiration from his journal and his own recipes. A generous friend and lover of good food,  Monet had created an oasis of creativity in his Giverny home, and with the help of this wonderfully curated cookbook, we can take in glimpses of inspiration to create our own version of Giverny.
Put on your most flowery dress and don’t forget a lacy shawl draped on your shoulders for after dark.
You are officially invited to An evening in Giverny.

Browsing through a cookbook first thing in the morning is a kind of luxury one can only afford on holiday… Nature seems to give the rhythm, and you let your imagination follow. What if you served a cheese soufflé as airy and light as the morning mist ? And maybe some baby carrots, golden and smiling like the first ray of light. Every great party starts with a plan, and the early hours of the day are the perfect time to decide. Infinite possibilities, great expectations and joyful cooking. It’s time to begin !

We start off in the morning sun, putting together a basket full of yummy produce from the garden. I was blessed to have a few days in this secret garden created by passionate lovers of nature, but if you live in the city, take the time to explore your local farmer’s market, be present while you take your pick from the generous harvest of the summer. Let your senses be inspired by the vibrant colours and delicious smells. It is food for the soul…And don’t forget the flowers, a beautiful table has to have a touch of colour, either from the garden or from your favourite florist.

Back in your kitchen, put on your favourite music, something to give you the boost of energy to prepare a feast for yourself or for your loved ones. Then, let the magic begin !
As usual, you will find the recipes here on the website, in the Recipes menu.

As the sun begins to set, it’s time to get the table ready. A formal garden party is the perfect time to take out your precious china and show it off. This particular set belonged to my great grandmother, and it has seen many family gatherings for more than one hundred years. A delicate blue pattern, from the Chodau manufacture in Czechoslovakia, dated 1918.Setting the table is a ritual on its own, and one that connects you to the book in a very special way, as it is the translation of the feeling you had while reading. Cookbooks are usually seen as purely functional, but they often speak of more than just recipes. This particular one has many descriptions of Monet’s life and lifestyle, his unique quality of bringing people together and offering a canvas for a gathering of the spirit. Keep that in mind while you arrange your table, even if it is only for you.

When the moon starts to peek at your table, you know it’s time for the feast to begin. The conversation will give the tempo for your meal, as the candles slowly melt away with every laughter…Take the time to enjoy a nice liqueur at the end of the meal. This elderflower St Germain, served in my grandmothers antique hand painted glasses, is the perfect end to an elegant evening.

A ritual of summer delights, inspired by an extra ordinary book.
