Hello my friends ! And welcome to a little workshop episode in our Advent Calendar.
While researching Scandinavian lifestyle and traditions, I couldn’t help but notice the strong ecological emphasis that each and every one of these countries develop and promote. The comfort of winter living is not brought on by expensive gadgets or the accumulation of things to distract us from the cold or the darkness. True Scandinavian comfort comes from within.
Inspired by this eco friendly energy, I decided to make some home made Christmas tree ornaments, in order to minimise my holiday shopping frenzy. I usually make some DIY ornaments every year, but for my Scandinavian Christmas tree, I found it appropriate to up my production a little.
And since I am such a notorious reader, what could be more appropriate than some book print ornaments. I don’t like to cut up a book, even an old one, but I was lucky enough (even though I didn’t feel like it at the time) to receive one of my online book orders as a print error. All the pages were glued starting from the end, not really practical when reading in English.
My not so secret inspiration came from Pinterest, where I found an endless collection of home made paper ornaments, so I got started right away. This was my first glue gun project, so it took some time mastering the beast, but as always, the best motivation is when you start seeing the results.
This is a perfect activity for winter evenings, you can involve the whole family or simply as a me-time, while listening to Christmas carols and drinking some mulled cider. The parallel with the traditional white paper Swedish stars that are hung in front of windows is clear, although I didn’t have the courage to make one, so I kept to the tree ornaments instead, where I was able to colour outside the lines a little and make whatever felt doable.
