Advent Calendar DAY 6 : Book Gifts (part1)

Christmas presents under the tree are the classic idyllic image we all have in our minds. And while we struggle to return to simpler ways and resist the urge of buying and consuming more and more, I think offering books for Christmas is a wonderful gesture, full of meaning. You are not only offering a story, but you are giving your friends and loved ones the gift of slow and meaningful living. You are suggesting a moment of quiet pause and reflection, and that is one precious gift. So I’ll leave you with a few ideas of books to offer your friends, however diverse their personalities may be…

For the one that finishes his books too soon…

You should obviously choose the biggest book you can find. But since bigger is not always better, here’s my suggestion : Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts (and if you want to go all out, add on the sequel, The Mountain Shadow). A partially autobiographical story, an exploration of India and its many worlds, Shantaram will seduce the adventure seeking reader, that burns through the story in an instant.

For the one that takes forever to choose a book…

They’ve probably spent so much time in front of bookshelves, you’ll have a hard time surprising them. So go for the niche book, the title you never see on bookstagram or in book reviews online. I would suggest something like The King, by Kader Abdolah. A fictional kingdom of Iran, the figure of a king in a story that will ring a bell for those who know the real history of this fascinating country. A surprising book that speaks of Persian lifestyle and the dangers of power.

For the Trend reader…

My best bet would be the winner of a literary Prize. The more recent, the better, but when you can, go with a title you know. My preference would be Ann Patchett’s Bel Canto. Winner of 3 awards, and nominee for 2 more, it’s a beautifully constructed novel, exciting enough for a thriller passionate reader, yet human enough for a reader in search of meaning. Many well drawn characters, who develop surprising relationships, a passionate read for sure.

To be continued in a few days. Until then, enjoy your reading and your Advent Calendars !
