The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus
by L.Frank Baum
This Christmas season, I decided to switch things up a bit, and try out some children’s stories and Christmas themed fantasy. These are not genres I usually read, so the challenge was considerable, but even I have to admit that there is no better time of year to enjoy them.
I started off with The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus by L.Frank Baum, in this beautiful edition from Penguin Christmas Classics.
Author of the famous The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Lyman Frank Baum was a 19th century American actor, independent filmmaker and most of all, prolific writer. His children’s books have shaped the imagination of many generations, so it’s only befitting to read his winter themed story.
A Santa Claus brought up by fairies and wood nymphs, what’s there not to like ?
From his childhood in the enchanted forest, to his destiny of sharing gifts and spreading joy, we get to spend some time with Santa Claus and learn the many different skills he must master in order to make every Christmas a special moment.
The writing is rich and whimsical, it made me feel like I was in a beautiful movie full of extraordinary characters. And the illustrations from the first edition are wonderful. A moment to enjoy as a child or as an adult, and to remember that Santa is as real as the joy he brings each year.
See you tomorrow, for a decorating session…
