Scandinavian Advent Calendar DAY 13 : inspiration for the Christmas Table

Scandinavian design has been all the rave in the last few decades. From the functional Ikea dinnerware, to the famous designers in decorative arts museum all over the world, the news has spread : Scandinavian countries have a unique style that is worth discovering. And for our Christmas table decorations, I’m bringing you to the flagship store of one of the most famous porcelain manufacturers in the world : Royal Copenhagen.

Founded in 1775 under the protection of Danish Dowager Queen Juliane Marie, Royal Copenhagen has brought together French porcelain technique and Chinese blue and white inspiration, for a unique and deeply Scandinavian result. Awards from universal exhibitions and endorsement from the royal family have contributed to the company’s success. Two major patterns have become their absolute trademark.

Blue Fluted Plain came to life in 1775 as the first ever pattern from Royal Copenhagen. Still today, the classic blue floral pattern is produced just as it was centuries ago, each piece of porcelain treated as a piece of art, carefully painted by hand.

In 1790, Royal Copenhagen was commissioned by the king to produce a “Flora Danica” dinner service, with gilded edges and botanical motifs copied from the ongoing illustrated Flora Danica comprehensive atlas of botany. The dinner service was intended as a gift for Empress Catherine the Great. Royal Copenhagen has produced hand-painted pieces of “Flora Danica” to this day, with the latest additions honouring the indigenous flora of Greenland.

And for the festive season, the highlight of their flagship store is an exhibition of designer Christmas tables on the upper floors, where Danish artists bring out their imagination in a feast for the eyes. Have a look at this year’s exhibit.

I hope you gathered some inspiration for your festive tables this year. For a family dinner, an intimate brunch or simply tea for one in the afternoon, I hope you’ll make your holiday tables sparkle with imagination.

Until tomorrow, dream on !

Spread the love
